The IIAR Publication Bulletin-114, Guidelines for Identification of Ammonia Refrigeration Piping & System Components spells-it-out, and reads as follows: “ System Components include Compressors and Compressor Units, Condensers, Receivers, Thermosyphon Vessels, Recirculators, Intercoolers, Accumulators, Transfer Vessels, Heat Exchangers, Oil-Pots, and any other component of the refrigeration system containing refrigerant that is not included in the piping system.“ The Rule Says - ALL Vessels Containing Refrigerant Not Included in the Piping System MUST have I.D. And that is why it is often neglected, going completely unnoticed by everyone with the exception of the Compliance Officer. I know, it may seem like the least of your worries especially, during a government audit by OSHA. To date, one of OSHA and the EPA’s favorite plant inspection procedures is to gather all facility refrigeration records, including your most recent Mechanical Integrity Inspection Report, and bring it all back to their office for a “Sit-Down Audit”.īeyond the usual out-of-date Pressure Relief Valves, Weird Piping configurations, Defunct Equipment, Documentation and Paperwork problems, OSHA inspectors will zero-in on an often overlooked issue specifically found in the Bulletin-109 General Safety section, citing the lack of proper Labeling and Signage.

But not all work-place signs are bad, and in fact actually serve a useful purpose. In some cases, it is mind-boggling and in others it’s just plain blocking-up the scenery. Signs are becoming more and more prevalent in the refrigeration industry workplace, and are even required to be posted on the most obvious self-descriptive pieces of equipment on site. Remember that old 1971 song by the 5-Man Electrical Band? There is a certain amount of truth to their lament.
